It's an exciting time for pole dancing in Australia! If you're local, clear your diary... if you're international, start booking your plane tickets over here.
The Australian Pole Dance Championships™ will be run for the first time in 2009 and will showcase pole dancing in Australia.
The Australian Pole Dance Championships™ 2009
12th – 14th November 2009, The Thornbury Theatre, Melbourne.
The Australian Pole Dance Championships™ is an industry only event, taking competitive pole dancing into a professional, sporting realm. Australia needs an industry only, professional competition for all pole dancers in Australia. The aim is to provide a fair competition focusing on the athleticism, strength and artistry of the sport.
The APD Championships is fully endorsed and supported by international board of The International Pole Federation (IPF).
There will be four different divisions within the competition. These divisions are:
Freestyle Pole Women’s
Freestyle Pole Men’s
Pure Pole
Open Pairs

I agree, it was an amazing 3 days of pole championships!! I loved watching the contrast in pole dance between the different divisions, especially seeing the strength and artistry of pole dance that the men displayed! It was awesome networking with the industry and our supporters, and meeting some more Aussies off the forum! _________________

The inaugural Australian Pole Dance Championships were just held over 3 days this weekend in Melbourne! This event was a sporting competition that was the first of its kind in Australia to include males in its competition, who could compete in a men's division and in an open pairs division.
The competition embraced all styles of pole dance, and aimed to highlight pole dancers as professional athletes.
The talent was brilliant, and everyone put on amazing performances. An industry tradeshow also accompanied the event, which facilitated networking amongst companies that support our industry and provided another avenue for industry networking. It was great to see some forum people there too, some old faces and some new!
A DVD will be released and available for sale through the website http://www.australianpoledance.com. The website and Facebook page will contain any updates and new information as it comes to hand, as well as photos of the event as they are released!
Besides the Freestyle Men's division, the Pure Pole division was another unique feature of the competition. This division was similar to a gymnastics or ice skating competition as it had some specific guidelines to it. A genre of music was set (everyone had to dance to a classical piece this year) there was no costuming - barefeet and plain black dancewear only, and competitors had to incorporate 10 required moves and a 30 second aerial combo into their routine. It was just magic to watch!!
A big thank you to the International Pole Federation who endorsed the Australian Pole Dance Championships, and to Jamilla who was our technical judge across all 3 days of the competition. What a huge effort!! She was supported by a team of other judges from dance, fitness, pole and circus performance fields, including Sonia, New Zealand's IPF representative and owner of Kiwi Pole Fitness. Thank you all for your time and support!!
We also made the announcement that from next year the competition will become the Australasian Pole Dance Championships, opening up to a wider, international competitor base!!
Here are the final results for 2009!
Freestyle Women's
1st place: Michelle Hafner
2nd place: Missy
3rd place: Fontaine Bradbury
Freestyle Men's
1st place: Steven Watson
2nd place: Avan Whaite
3rd place: Paul Bennett
